"…students decide on an approach to the topic and
consider what they already know and what they need to find out."
(Donna, 2002,
p. 20)
ISP Stage
At this stage students identify a general topic or area of investigation to be explored. Students look at a range of possible topics to investigate, weighing these against the task criteria, personal interest and potential for success. They make a judgement based on the best topic and investigation approach to successfully complete the task. Once they have selected the topic for the task, students feel a readiness to begin (Kuhlthau 2004; Kuhlthau, Maniotes & Caspari 2007).Year 6 History Inquiry
Students choose their general topic, aspect of, or
question. Possible topics should be weighed against personal interest, information available which may include family history, time allotted and assignment requirements.
Students discuss topic with others.
Focusing on a local area, discover who were the immigrants
and their reasons for migrating.
Through the use of graphic organisers students begin to
understand the topic and to find the area of focus for them.
ISP and WEB 2.0 in the classroom
After sharing KWLs in the classroom, the teacher would work
with the class to define the topic of the investigation to reflect the inquiry
question:
Who were the people that came to
Australia? Why did they come?
At this stage the teacher might ask the students to write
their own versions of this question on a virtual pin board such as Wallwisher,
to be referred to and added to during the next stage. The class may also begin
a shared concept map to begin organising some of the general information about
the topic to understand the topic and begin to identify areas for focus.
